The PENGUIN project is excited to launch its very first animated video, showcasing how we are creating a new generation of high-performance outdoor textiles that are safe, sustainable, and inspired by nature.
The problem with today’s outdoor gear
Much of the high-performance outdoor apparel on the market relies on conventional synthetic materials and chemical treatments to achieve properties like water repellency. Many of these treatments use per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called “forever chemicals,” which can harm our environment and health. The European Union’s climate goals and sustainability initiatives demand a better, greener alternative.
Our solution: bio-Inspired, high-performance textiles
This is where the PENGUIN project comes in. Our mission is to transform the outdoor textile market by developing materials that are both effective and eco-friendly.
We are creating advanced cellulose-based fibers and fabrics—using a renewable resource—and engineering them with innovative biomimetic chemistries. “Biomimetic” means we are inspired by nature. Think of how water beads up and rolls off a lotus leaf; we are applying similar principles to our textiles to achieve enhanced hydrophobicity (water repellency) without the need for harmful chemicals.
All of our work is guided by the EU’s Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) principles, ensuring our products are safe for consumers and the planet from start to finish. You can learn more about our specific mission on our PENGUIN project.
